How to Maximize Storage Space in Your Shed

Jon Lantz • January 8, 2026

Storage sheds from Jed’s Sheds are great investments for New Jersey homeowners to organize their tools and equipment when maintaining their backyards. When using a shed, no matter the size, you’ll have to determine how much space you have for your belongings and figure out the best way to organize them. Maximizing the space you have in your shed is the best way to organize your items. Below, we’ve explained some skillful ways you can maximize space in your storage shed.

Utilize Vertical Space

Take your storage space up the walls with pegboards and shelving to utilize the vertical space in your shed. This will also make your belongings more accessible and easier to find. Our Dutch Barn Sheds offer more wall space for organization.

Pegboards

Pegboards are wall-mounted boards that have small holes where you can attach hooks and small baskets for easy organization. These versatile storage options allow you to see all your frequently used items, save space, and give easy access to what you need. They’re great for displaying your tools, seeds, shovels, rakes, cords, and other smaller items. With a pegboard, your items will be within arm's reach, and the versatility of the board allows you to easily rearrange your items depending on your needs.

Shelves

Adjustable, floating, and metal shelves help you get your items off the floor to organize them effectively. Metal shelves are more durable and can hold heavier items, and are easy to move around when you reorganize the shed or for cleaning. Adjustable shelves allow you to customize your organization depending on the size of the item you need to store. We recommend using deeper shelves for power tools and narrower shelves for things like jars and spray paint cans. We also find it best to put heavier items on lower shelves, less-used items on higher shelves, and your most frequently used tools in the middle so they’re at arm’s reach. With shelves, make sure they’re anchored to the wall for safety.

Add a Loft for Overhead Space

Most of our shed styles have enough wall and overhead space to add a loft for overhead storage. Our Dutch Barn and Quaker sheds have a high ceiling that’s designed for overhead storage. Lofts are great for storing seasonal items or items you infrequently use to keep them out of the way. They will enhance your storage capabilities, keeping your floor and wall storage full of important equipment. Adding a loft is good for your bulkier items that would crowd the floor, like holiday decorations, camping gear, and cushions for summer outdoor furniture

Use Bins and Containers to Organize

Bins and containers are great organizational tools for a shed. We recommend only using plastic containers, as cardboard ones will attract pests. We like to use clear plastic bins so that you can see what’s inside them. If using colored plastic bins, label them appropriately so you can find them easily. Small bins are good for nails, screws, and similar items. For larger bins, place items and tools used for similar projects in the same storage bin for efficient organization. The lids of these bins must be secured so the items inside are protected from moisture, dirt, dust, and pests. These bins can then be placed on shelves or sturdy bookshelves for storage.

Throw Out Unneeded Items

Decluttering your shed is key to organization and maximizing your storage space. At least once a year, but we recommend doing this seasonally, get rid of any items that are old, broken, or not needed anymore. Only keep the essential items that you use frequently in your shed, so it is not overcrowded. This will make the space better organized so you can focus on your projects.

Add a Workbench

A workbench provides both a workspace and increased organization for your shed. It is mainly used to work on your projects, whether it be woodworking, car maintenance, or gardening. However, it can double as a storage space for your project, as our workbenches leave room for a storage shelf underneath. You can use it for your most used tools for your passion project, making the space more efficient to work while keeping the floor clean.
